Why impervious area calculation matters in a permit file
An impervious-area calculation converts the site's roofs, pavement, and other regulated surfaces into an auditable area total and percentage. It is useful only when the local definition, zoning-lot area, existing inventory, proposed changes, material classifications, and math all match.

Definition and threshold
The municipality identifies counted surfaces, exclusions, maximum percentage, net-increase threshold, and stormwater triggers.
Existing-area schedule
The survey or plan inventories each existing roof, drive, walk, patio, pool, and other regulated surface by dimensions and material.
Proposed calculation
Removed, replaced, and new areas are shown separately before the final square footage and percentage are calculated.
Mitigation or redesign
An overage or threshold can require smaller improvements, removal, permeable systems, infiltration, detention, engineering, or other local relief.
