Permit guide · Garage
A garage usually carries a heavier review path because it combines vehicle storage, a permanent slab or foundation, wide door openings, structural loads, anchorage, zoning placement, drainage, and often electrical work. Attached garages also introduce fire-separation and dwelling-connection details.

The short answer
A new attached or detached garage generally needs building and zoning approval. The exact filing package depends on the address, garage size, attached or detached condition, foundation design, wall and roof framing, large door openings, local wind and snow loads, distance from lot lines and other buildings, utilities, and whether the authority requires conventional plans or sealed design documents for the proposed scope.
What we check
Verify the zoning district, side and rear setbacks, street-side or corner-lot rules, maximum accessory-building area and height, lot coverage, driveway access, building separation, and any overlay or design-review requirement.
Show property lines, existing and proposed structures, garage dimensions, setback distances, driveway, easements, utilities, drainage, grading, and private well or septic features where applicable. The authority may require a current survey.
Garage review commonly includes slab thickness, thickened edges or footings, frost-depth requirements, reinforcement, base preparation, anchor bolts or approved connectors, and the connection between the foundation, walls, and roof.
Plans may need floor, elevation, section, framing, header, truss, bracing, and connection details. Large spans, unusual systems, prefabricated packages, site conditions, or local policy can trigger engineered or architect-sealed documents; stamping is not universal for every garage.
Wide overhead-door openings leave narrow wall segments that must resist wind and other lateral loads. Reviewers may check headers, portal frames, shear walls, hold-downs, fastening schedules, and manufacturer details.
An attached garage can trigger rated wall or ceiling assemblies, protected openings, door requirements, penetration protection, separation from sleeping rooms, and details for the connection to the dwelling. Detached-garage rules can differ.
Branch circuits, panels, lighting, receptacles, garage-door equipment, EV charging, gas piping, heating, plumbing, or floor drains may need separate trade permits, licensed contractors, equipment documents, and their own inspections.
Common checkpoints include excavation or footing, pre-pour reinforcement, slab or foundation, framing, rough trades, insulation where applicable, and final inspection. The actual sequence must be confirmed before work is concealed.
Process
Vehicle storage, permanent foundations, broad overhead-door openings, heavier structural spans, driveway and drainage changes, trade work, and attached-garage fire separation create a different review package. A jurisdiction may publish separate handouts, details, and inspections for sheds and garages even when both are accessory structures.
Per state
IL
Illinois garage permits are primarily administered locally. Municipal and county guides may separate detached garages from sheds and call for site plans, concrete and anchorage details, structural drawings, contractor registration, trade permits, and staged inspections.

Wisconsin's dwelling code does not place every detached garage inside the same statewide review path as the home, but local building and zoning rules still control garage permits, foundations, placement, trade work, and inspections. Attached conditions can involve the dwelling code directly.

Indiana garage requirements vary by local authority. Size, permanent foundations, setbacks, septic or site approval, structural plans, utilities, and attached-versus-detached conditions can change the application and inspection path.
