Why combustion air matters in a permit file

Combustion air supplies fuel-burning appliances with enough oxygen to operate safely and helps prevent harmful depressurization and backdrafting. A replacement appliance can change the calculation when the room, building tightness, exhaust equipment, venting, or appliance type differs from the old installation.

Where it appears in the permit process

  1. Appliance and space inventory

    Input ratings, appliance categories, room volume, enclosure, doors, exhaust systems, and building conditions are documented.

  2. Code-path selection

    The installer selects an approved indoor-air, outdoor-air, engineered, direct-combustion, or other locally accepted method.

  3. Mechanical review

    Openings, ducts, grilles, louvers, free area, location, protection, venting, and manufacturer requirements are shown.

  4. Final safety verification

    The inspector verifies the installed air path, appliance, venting, clearances, controls, and required operational tests.

Common mistakes that create comments or delays

  • Assuming the old room arrangement is acceptable for new equipment
  • Sizing an opening by nominal grille dimensions instead of net free area
  • Ignoring dryers, range hoods, exhaust fans, and other depressurization sources
  • Blocking or finishing over combustion-air openings after inspection
